S.P.Y (Hospital Records | London)

Since moving to London from Sao Paolo 9 years ago, Carlos Lima aka S.P.Y hasn’t looked back. Initially drawn to the city for its music and culture, S.P.Y soon settled in amongst the vibrant drum & bass scene. With a background in DJing stretching back to the age of 12, his skills behind the turntables were already in place and he set out to make his mark as a producer. A natural talent for music production certainly helped and, after just six months of learning on basic equipment, he signed his first ever release to Metalheadz in 2005. His impressive debut ‘Til Dawn’ was included on the Winter of Content compilation album and a sure sign that S.P.Y would be one to watch.

In 2006, he quickly followed up with ‘Black Flag b/w Double Dragon’ for new label Med School and helped set the standard for Hospital’s alternative, more experimental imprint. Developing his own brand of original yet dancefloor-friendly beats, S.P.Y stepped up his game with a further single (‘Ghost Ship b/w Silent Sleep- er’) before moving on to release on diverse labels including Critical and Samurai.

A series of collaborations followed with the likes of Mosus, Physics, BCee and Kiat: no surprise, given S.P.Ys reputation in the studio and professional yet easy-going outlook. In 2008, two of his joint productions (‘Close Encounters’ with Kiat and ‘Cold 909s’ with Mosus) were among the standout tracks in the excellent DAT Music 2 compilation and marked his debut for Soul:r.

2009 brought his first solo EP for Soul:r, demonstrating his diversity drawing together deeper vibes and dancefloor sensibilities. He also established lasting production partnerships with Total Science and DJ Marky and dropped further releases on Digital Soundboy, Innerground and Metalheadz.

In 2010 S.P.Y stepped it again and proved to be capable of both quality and consistency, delivering standout releases for Ram, Metalheadz, Shogun and Spearhead. His tracks won DJ support across the scene, with Friction featuring 5 S.P.Y productions on his Ministry of Sound mix CD and Andy C selecting 4 for his Nightlife CD. Marky & S.P.Y also took on high-profile remixes for the likes of Deadmau5, Claude von Stroke and Zinc Ft. Miss Dynamite, with S.P.Y’s own personal unofficial relicks of Zero 7 and LTJ Bukem becoming a signature in his live sets. Add to this a universally adored remix for Logistics track ‘By Your Side’ on Spearhead Re- cords, and 2010 proved to be a vintage year for S.P.Y.

2011 saw further releases set for Soul:r, Subtitles, Razors Edge, and Reinforced early in the year followed by collaborative appearances on Marcus Intalex’s album and more alongside Total Science and Marky, plus a high profile remixes commissioned for Delilah, True Tiger feat. Professor Green, & Wretch 32.

Later in the year came the announcement that S.P.Y signed exclusively to Hospital Records and is working hard on his debut LP for the label. S.P.Y’s trademark darker, heavily groove oriented style has seen him become the talk of the underground, and this was of particular interest to Hospital Records to add a new dimension to their existing roster of artists. An alliance of epic proportions, the entire Drum and Bass scene waits patiently for the results of S.P.Y’s journey into the album format after proving himself as one of the most consistent singles artists in Drum and Bass.

2012 is S.P.Y’s biggest year yet with an E.P. in May and the release of his debut LP In July for Hospital Records. In the mean time this global favorite has built an enviable back catalogue of work that continues to give his army of fans worldwide fuel to maintain his legendary status as the scene is set for the new chapter in his career.

Adred (Natural Selection | NY)

Born Adam Baker, son of a musically talented father and artist mother he was destined to be a great musician. Growing up listening to David Bowie, Eric Clapton and Thomas Dolby shaped his love for music at a young age. At the age of 16 Adam first heard Drum and Bass at a rave and wanted to replicate the energy and excitement he witnessed first hand. It wasn’t until years later when he had the opportunity to express it first by DJing. At the age of 20, he bought his first set of turntables and a mixer. Quickly learning and understanding the techniques of mixing music, a year later he was given the opportunity to play out. He knew all along that he wanted to create his own music and that being a DJ wouldn’t be enough to set himself apart from rest of the world. Little did he know, that a chance meeting in a neighborhood record store would launch his career as a producer. He didn’t stop at Drum and Bass but ventured into Hip Hop, R&B, Techno, House and everything in between. He doesn’t believe in pigeonholing himself in one genre and always produces music by feeling and bpm. Currently he is working on multiple releases with Robert Manos in many different genres. Keep an eye out for him and these songs.

Paradox & Robert Manos, Saturday 4.21

12 04 2012

A breakbeat pioneer…

Paradox
(Metalheadz | Paradox Music | Secret Operations)

Dev Pandya is a certified breakbeat pioneer with a production career spanning 21 years. Having first released back in 1990, he’s since amassed a back catalogue of 9 albums and over 130 12” singles on leading drum and bass labels including 4 Hero’s Reinforced, LTJ Bukem’s Good Looking, London Elektricity’s Hospital and Goldie’s Metalheadz. He nowadays runs his own imprints as the primary outlet for his tracks, with Paradox Music, Arctic Music, Esoteric and Outsider each having a unique identity and focus.

Producing alone under the names Paradox and Alaska, he also collaborates with the likes of Seba and Nucleus, as well as vocalists including Kirsty Hawkshaw and Robert Manos. His appetite for touring remains as strong as ever and he continues to astound and entertain crowds with his live shows, mixing banter, commentary and chat with breakbeats for a one-off PA.

The musical career of Dev Pandya dates back to 1990 when Mixrace was formed with partner DJ Trax. From their first releases on leading hardcore label Moving Shadow, the pair went on to set-up and record for their own labels before Dev’s two alter-ego guise’s emerged in 1996.

Exploding across the scene with a string of 12″ releases on Renegade Hardware, Certificate 18 and Reinforced Records, Alaska/Paradox soon became a name synonymous with abstract atmospherics and intricate breaks. His Alaska alias appeared at the same time yet focused on more ambient productions, releasing on labels such as Good Looking, Renegade, Vibez, 720 Degrees and Nexus.

Pioneering a style that channels the 70’s funk of breakbeats, Paradox has always focused on the raw elements of drum and bass within his music. Appealing to an audience beyond the confines of a club environment, his production credits include work for ESPN, Konami Arcade platforms and Sony Playstation games in the Usa and Japan.

Often choosing to position himself as an outsider, Paradox’s success has never been limited to that of the Uk-orientated drum and bass scene. He has collaborated with some of greatest contemporary musicians the world has to offer, including Herbie Hancock, Bill Laswell, Shobha Gurtu, Toshinori Kondo and Bernie Worrell.

2011 saw Dev release the Ramifications LP (astonishingly Dev’s 9th studio album to date) and the follow up to 2002’s Reinforced Records What they don’t know LP. Like all Paradox albums the packaging was again stunning featuring Triple Marble Vinyl plus a Solid-Black Compact Disc for music lovers and record collectors looking for something extra special.

As a bonus, the solid-black disc version included extra tracks and more from the infamous Sample Me series – specially edited breakbeat samples for aspiring producers to loop and splice – and shows Paradox’s commitment to the grass roots of the scene, giving something back to the fans and those he’s inspired.

When he’s not in the studio, Paradox is inevitably on tour and continues to entertain crowds with his live shows truly worldwide. Armed only with his trusty Amiga, synths and a mic, he performs a truly live PA, reconstructing tracks from his back catalogue and editing beats on the fly. He has performed over 200 live PA’s covering Australia, USA, Asia, Europe and beyond, and continues to venture into unchartered territory to represent his sound.

2012 will see Dev continue to perform live pa’s globally and release 12” singles on the Arctic, Paradox and Esoteric labels plus guest 12” releases on Samuri and Warm communications. Collaborations with Seba, Nucleus and Robert Manos will all surface in 2012 plus work will begin on the 10th studio album confirming Paradox as the most consistent DnB producer over the last 20 years.

Natural Selection presents Loxy | Saturday, April 7, 2012

4 03 2012

LOXY (Cylon | Metalheadz | Exit)

http://soundcloud.com/loxy_  |  http://www.facebook.com/LoxyUK

It’s been a long road for London-bred Loxy, aka Andrew Campbell, who has played a seminal part in every step of Drum & Bass’ evolution over the last two decades. He’s one of few artists that has continued to influence all elements of the Drum & Bass movement from the underground up, with no signs of stopping. Keeping his face in the background, but a strong, characteristic sound in the front, for someone like Loxy it’s never been about image, fame or hype – it’s only the music that speaks.

It was music that spoke to Loxy himself at a very young age, growing up in a house where sounds vibrated off the walls, around the clock. As he tells: “Music was very influential in our family – from dub, reggae, ragga, hip hop, soul, funk, pop, you name it. If it was good, it got played in our house.” A B-Boy and fan of hip hop and electro in the late 80s, it was only natural that he would fall into what was then dubbed a “new phenomenon”: pirate radio opened his eyes to the futuristic sounds of acid house and techno. A blink of those eyes and several mixtapes later, and Loxy became immersed in the world of rave and DJ culture, which was slowly morphing into the sounds of early Jungle. Attending events such as Telepathy (in Marshgate Lane, Stratford in London), he went deep into the sounds of Jumpin Jack Frost, Fabio, Grooverider and Rat Pack: “I was hooked,” he says.

Loxy started hunting down vinyl with insatiable dedication, and by 1990-1991, he started to share his collection and talents behind the decks. Through a friend promoting parties, he ended up on the stage at East London’s legendary Dungeons - and from there, the gigs started flying in at an unruly pace. Loxy’s name was soon spread across flyers for events that now hold their veritable place in rave history books, including ElevationDesireClub JungleThunder and Joy. He also became a regular on various radio waves across London (such as Underground FM, Pulse FM, Chillin FM, Rude FM and Eruption FM), bringing a darker edge that was influenced by the sounds of Face Records, Reinforced and Moving Shadow.

In 1993, with a head brimming with ideas that combined his musical upbringing and a future-forward mindset, Loxy came across two likeminded artists at Brain Studios – Bizzy B and TDK. His first forays into production came hard and fast – their very first track ‘Roll Call’ became regularly played by the likes of DJ Rap, Trace and Bryan Gee. With an exacting production style, he started forming a network that connected the dots of the music that inspired him: Bay B Kane not only fed him the newest dubs, but also signed one of his tracks to his 4star record label (which went through the then-popular Whitehouse Records) – and his encounters with LTJ Bukem and Tayla revealed both their common interests in music and a healthy supply of Good Looking dubplates. It wasn’t long before his record bag was indisputable.

One of his most fated introductions came when he met Giles Mensah, aka Ink - when they joined forces, the chemistry was instant and absolute. Loxy tells that the two connected through “a shared love of the music and similar yet varied tastes.” Their first track – ‘Submerged’ - was released on Architecture Recordings, and also held a feature spot on Kemistry and Storm’s ‘DJ Kicks’ mix compilation. From the beginnings, it was clear that destiny held much promise for the duo – and eventually they became an archetypal pair in D&B, creating some of the most essential anthems in the harder, darker, more dub-influenced terrains of the genre.

Though his productions were gaining his name more attention, Loxy’s DJ’ing never slowed up – growing from strength to strength, he always staying dedicated to the craft. As Loxy puts it himself: “I would always consider myself a DJ first and producer second, but making tunes to play was what got me motivated to pursue it more.” As Loxy and Ink came across like-minded artists at D&B events, they befriended the likes of Digital, Spirit, Source Direct, Photek, Peshay and Kemistry and Storm. When the scene-defining Blue Note club opened in the mid-90s, it was the latter two DJs that suggested to Metalheadz leader Goldie that Loxy should be the resident. “The rest is history,” Loxy tells, which couldn’t be further from the truth: his name was locked in the D&B archives from then on, alongside the Blue Note’s legacy, even holding down the record as the only artist to DJ a whole night at the Sunday Sessions. Loxy became a mainstay on the club circuit in the early years of D&B, DJ’ing the events that would one day set the blueprint – Leisure Lounge Sessions, Hannover Grand, the Cafe De Paris SessionsSpeedSwerveLogical Progression, and Pure Science. His residency at Blue Note stemmed on to all of Goldie’s Metalheadz nights from that point forward (to this day), and he’s since held London residencies at Renegade Hardware and Therapy. Beyond his rotating nights, Loxy has played at all D&B events across the board, and around the world – including Exit RecordsSun & BassCreamfields, Fabric, Club Jungle, Desire,Elevation, One Nation, Slammin Vinyl, Valve, Breakbeat Kaos, Revolution, Legend of The Dark, MovementThe End, and Theory, among many others…the list is seemingly endless.

As a producer, Loxy’s discography is a tour through D&B history, and about as thick and chronological as it gets. It’s the attention to detail that always makes a Loxy production stand out: tough and hard-hitting, with basslines and drums intricately layered with meticulous precision. Building fierce rhythms, his sharply sculpted beats slide against different backdrops: sometimes bringing the feel of a smooth club roller, other times dropping the listener straight into the deepest end of the dancefloor. With such a vast depth in sound, it’s no wonder that over the years he’s worked with labels as varied as Good Looking Records, Exit Records, Metalheadz, Renegade Hardware, Razors Edge, Digital Soundboy, Shogun Audio andArchitecture Recordings.

Always on the hunt for the next sound, Loxy started Cylon Recordings in the early 2000‘s with Dylan, as a way to revive their love of hardcore. He also went on to start a joint imprint with Keaton (of the Usual Suspects) called X-tinction Agenda, which reflects both artists’ tastes with an aim to represent and cultivate the near ‘x-tinct’ sound of what they deem “true Drum & Bass – breakbeats & sub bass.” His most recent imprint, Cx:Digital, has been a labor of love on his own, as a platform to push the D&B sound even further.

With his partnership with Ink being the most notorious, Loxy was also the founder of the infamous The Four Horsemen – with original members Ink, Dylan and Keaton, it became a global group with artists such as Gremlinz, Mutt and Outlook (to name a few). Over the years, Loxy’s also collaborated with other names dotted around the D&B spectrum, including Bad Company,Consequence, Zinc, Digital, Swift, Flatliners, Ena, Isotone, Genotype, Cern, Munk, Matt-u, D Kay, J. Dub, Usual Suspects,Universal Project and Resound.

It’s Resound that Loxy has teamed up with most recently, putting together an album for dBridge’s Exit Records in 2011. Watch this space.

Art Blakey III (NYC)

http://www.facebook.com/Art.Blakey

Art Blakey III was born in NYC into a family full of music, influenced as much by the gigs his Father and Grandfather would play at Jazz clubs and concerts as he was by the diverse musical culture that the greatest city in the world had to offer. After spending years training in piano, trumpet, and voice, his interest in DJing was piqued by the block parties in his Manhattan Valley neighborhood. It was not until he was struck by the lightning bolt that is Drum & Bass that he vowed to actually become a DJ, if only to be a messenger as his forefathers had been before him, spreading the music to all who would listen.

Thanks to Camouflage’s Christian Bruna and Tommy Etzi, Art was able to step forth and play out in the New York Drum n’ Bass scene and has been able to DJ with the likes of Raw Q, DJ Paul C, Odi, Dara, Mousky, TankTop NYC and Micah Chockley as well as Total Science, Sub Focus, The Insiders, R.A.W. and Wavewhore. Art now goes forth, bringing Drum & Bass from the Creator, to the decks, to you.

GOLDIE
(Metalheadz | UK)

It all began in 1991 at a club night called Rage at Heaven. The rave scene had emerged from acid house and was building its own identity, with pioneer Djs such as Fabio and Grooverider mixing cutting edge sounds with vintage funk and reggae and playing tracks like Carl Craig’s seminal ‘Bugs In The Attic’ at 45rpm instead of 33. The vibe was explosive, the adrenalin was pumping. This is where well-travelled Walsall born B boy Goldie (a name he got while customizing gold teeth) ended up when just from a few years in New York and Miami, taken by his new girlfriend Kemistry and her flatmate, known as DJ Storm.

Rage puzzled him the first time, blew his mind the second and there was no turning back: Goldie the UK B Boy who was hanging out with Nellee Hooper and 3 D pre Massive Attack, gold teeth maker, respected breakdancer and renowned Grafitti artist (his first brush with fame was taking part in ‘Bombin’, the definite documentary about the 80s graffiti scene) had found his purpose in life. He was going to make music, and his music was going to be played at clubs like Rage. Soon, Goldie met Mark and Dego AKA 4 Hero – from Reinforced Records, the reference label of the emerging scene. In exchange of artwork and logo design, he got into their legendary Dollis Hill studio. Under their guidance, Goldie did not only capture the vibe of the music he had heard out, but he added his own touch, inspired by his passion for hip hop, an insatiable musical curiosity. Getting the ultimate kick of watching and hearing Grooverider play his first ever track, Goldie grew in confidence and made his first official release for Reinforced, ‘Darkrider’ in 1992, under the Rufige Kru moniker. Thanks to the expertise he had picked up and his meeting with like-minded producers such as Doc Scott, Goldie was finding his own sound.

His passion and determination were rewarded the following year, and his third Reinforced release. With its dark atmosphere, steely breakbeats and restless vibe, ‘Terminator’ introduced what was to become a must in jungle production, timestretching. All the DJs followed the path of Grooverider, who instantly played the track when it was given to him. ‘Terminator’ brought a fresh, darker edge to the scene. Jungle had reached another level. Through his own Metalheadz imprint set up shortly after, Goldie showcased early releases by some of the most crucial jungle artists; from Doc Scott, Photek and Peshay to Dillinja, J Majik and Optical. The Metalheadz weekly residency at London’s legendary jazz club The Blue Note captured the essence of the music to a packed and enthusiastic audience and became a must. Goldie landed a contract with PeteTong’s offshoot FFRR, part of London Records, and released the sumptuous Timeless, a twisted hymn to urban Britain. Hailed unanimously, the album sold over 250,000 copies, comforting a charismatic, passionate and inspired Goldie as the spokerperson of the hippest scene of the times.

Fame kept rising beyond music. While turning into a bona fide celebrity with acting in cult and mainstream films, taking part of high profile TV shows, and becoming a fixture in the gossip columns, Goldie never ever lost touch with his jungle roots and was often spotted in the middle of the dancefloor at his own club nights, or paying respects to Grooverider or Randall. Nothing has captured better his attachment to the music than his sporadic return to the ‘Rufige Kru’ moniker for more uncompromising slices of vinyl, such as ‘Beachdrifta’ backed by a ‘Stormtroopaz’ VIP mix for the relaunch of Metalheadz in 2001. For the last few years, Goldie has DJed all over the world, still one of the highest profile ambassadors of drum and bass. For Goldie, turning into ‘Rufige Kru’ is capturing the essence of what makes him so passionate about music: a dark, unsettling, gutsy sound going back to the roots of jungle, made even more potent through state of the art studio production. In 2006, Goldie enrolled young and gifted producer Heist (AKA Strider) to help him deliver his ultimate tribute to the scene that captured his heart and soul over fifteen years ago: a Rufige Kru album, ‘Malice In Wonderland’, the first artist album ever for Metalheadz.

THE UPBEATS
(Non Vogue | New Zealand)

Hailing from Wellington, New Zealand, Terror Snake and Downie Wolf are The Upbeats, one of the most legendary production/DJ teams to emerge out the fertile New Zealand drum and bass scene. From playing ironic bootleg mash-ups at a tiny rock bar, to owning and operating their own record label, Non Vogue, this substantially more motivated “Wayne and Garth” of the drum and bass world are genuine innovators; in more ways than one. With a decade of experience in the music game they have released three critically lauded albums (with a fourth in the works) and countless singles on some of the most respected drum and bass record labels in the world. Known for their skills at constructing both digital pub rock anthems for the club and genuinely emotional home listening material – their musicality has seen them collaborate with or remix for the likes of Ed Rush and Optical, Noisia, Bad Company, Hive, Gridlock, Bulletproof, TREi, State of Mind, Shapeshifter and MSTRKRFT. Along the way they’ve performed extensively across New Zealand, Australia, North America, Europe and the UK building a loyal audience worldwide. Favoring an anything goes DJ style, their performances regularly trigger mosh pits, crowdsurfing, topless dancers, on-stage acrobatics and even once, dual zorb surfing at a capacity paint rave. Still as passionate about the creation and performance of music as they were ten years ago, The Upbeats continue to set standards across the board. Creatively speaking, these guys are far from done. Hold tight for the next episode.
